The process of applying for a Work Permit

Work Permit – list of Occupational Shortage

When your work permit has been granted the original document will be sent to you by your employer as you will need it in your possession before you enter the UK.

If you are classed as a visa national you simply just need to arrive in the UK with your work permit and your passport, it should be noted that your passport needs to be valid for at least six months from your date of entry into the UK. If you are not classed as a visa national you will need to apply for an Entry Clearance Visa at your nearest British Embassy based in your home country.

When you arrive in the UK you will need to present your documents, your work permit, passport and any necessary Visas to the immigration officer based at the port of entry. Once you have done this you will be granted entry for the duration of the work permit.

A work permit has a time limit of six months in which you will be working for a specific company to aid in a specific project or a to fill a job under the occupational shortage list such as healthcare and teaching. If however you are hoping to stay for longer than six months you will need a visa to accompany your work permit such as a Further Leave to Remain.

As a migrant on a work permit you are entitled to bring children and your spouse over to the UK during the six months that you will spend working within the UK. Your children are entitled to the same free education that is open to British nationals. However when it comes to healthcare, you are not covered by the National Health Service (NHS) for the six months you will spend working in the UK but you do have the option of taking out health insurance. If you are staying for longer than six months in the UK you are able to obtain free medical care from the NHS; this is however subject to you undergoing a medical examination.
