Who is exempt from the Worker Registration Scheme?

Worker Registration Scheme

If you wish to work for an employer in the UK for more than one month you must register under the Worker Registration Scheme; this applies to residents of the following countries:

  • Czech Republic
  • Estonia
  • Hungary
  • Latvia
  • Lithuania
  • Poland
  • Slovakia
  • Slovenia

There are however exceptions to this rule. The European Community Law gives you the right to live in the UK if you are working/have enough money to support yourself. You don’t however have to register under the Worker Registration Scheme if any of the following applies:

  • You are self-employed
  • You have been working legally in the United Kingdom for 12 months without a break
  • You are providing services in the United Kingdom on behalf of an employer who is not established in this country
  • You have dual citizenship of the United Kingdom, another country within the European Economic Area (EEA)
  • You are the family member of a Swiss or EEA citizen and that person is working in the United Kingdom
  • You are the family member of a Swiss or EEA citizen who is living in the United Kingdom as a student, or a retired or self-sufficient person

Also if you are working as self employed you are not obliged to register under the Worker Registration Scheme but it is essential that you contact HM Revenue & Customs as soon as possible in order to register for tax purposes; if this registration is late there is a £100 fine in place.
