You are required to take the Life in the UK Citizenship Test if you are planning to apply for British Naturalisation or Indefinite Leave to Remain (ILR). As of November 1st 2005 all applicants for UK Naturalisation need to successfully complete the test and as of April 2nd 2007 all applicants for Indefinite Leave to Remain will be required to take the test. You are required to take the Life in the UK Citizenship Test to show that you have an understanding about life in the UK. The Life in the UK Citizenship Test is based on chapters 2, 3 and 4 of the piece of text known as “Life in the Untied Kingdom: A Journey to Citizenship.” The test is a computer based one and is comprised of 24 questions, which you have 45 minutes to complete. In order to complete the test you will need to have a level of English which is ESOL Entry 3 or above. If your level of English is lower than ESOL Entry 3 and you wish to apply for naturalisation or indefinite leave to remain, you will need to attend combined English language (ESOL) and citizenship classes instead. You will be informed on the day whether you have passed the test or not and there is a pass rate of 75%. If you are successful in completing the Life in the UK Citizenship Test you will receive a pass letter, which needs to be signed. It is important that you keep this pass letter in a safe place because if you lose it you will have to retake the test. If however you fail the Life in the UK Citizenship Test you are able to re-take it but you will have to wait a minimum of seven days to do so.
