Domestic Workers UK Visa

This type of UK visa exists to allow domestic workers such as chauffeurs, gardeners, cooks and nannies etc to enter the UK for between six and 12 months. If you are a domestic worker who is hoping to come to the UK on a domestic workers visa there are certain restrictions that you must follow; one of the main ones being you are only permitted to come to the UK if you are coming over with your current employer to work for them as a domestic/household worker.

Certain other restrictions of this visa include the following:

  • Be aged between 18 to 65
  • Have been employed and living in the same house as your employer for one year or more prior to your application, or have been employed in a household that your employer uses on a regular basis for themselves for one year or more immediately prior to your application, and show evidence that there is a connection between you and your employer
  • You intend to travel to the UK in the company of your employer, your employer's spouse or your employer's child
  • Intend to work full-time as a domestic worker in the same property as your employer
  • Be able to maintain and accommodate yourself without the need for public funds

If you are successful in your domestic workers application you will have the same employee rights as British Nationals in the sense that your employer will have to present you with conditions of employment that both of you must then sign and be presented a copy of. These conditions of employment must include your agreed rate of pay, your entitlement to holiday pay and it must permit you the right of giving notice if you need to.

If, whilst you are in the UK on your domestic workers visa your employer leaves the UK permanently then you are expected to go with them; however if your employer is living permanently in the UK but is taking regular trips abroad then you do not need to go with them as long as they are going to be returning to the UK.

With a domestic workers visa you are permitted to bring you’re your spouse with you as long as you are going to be living together and have the correct amount of accommodation for both you and your spouse. You must be able to support yourself and your spouse without the use of public funding.

Whilst you are in the UK on a domestic workers visa you are entitled to the same healthcare within both UK hospitals and GP’s surgeries as British nationals are entitled to.
